We caught up with sophomore Aiden Burr, a Vessel Operations & Technology major, this week to learn a little about his co-op work experience this past summer. Aiden joined the Auxiliary University Program (AUP) last year to make himself eligible to work with his father during his father’s ...final deployment with the U.S. Coast Guard after a 20+ year career. This valuable experience not only allowed Aiden to build cherished memories with his father but also solidified his desire to join the Coast Guard after graduation.
During his first year summer CO-OP aboard USCGC WALNUT, Aiden participated in Operation Vigilant Sentry, helping save and repatriate 58 Cuban Migrants. Additionally, he participated in the servicing of navigational aids in the panhandle of Florida. Lastly, while Aiden was aboard USCGC WALNUT, the cutter was the center point for the United States Navy Blue Angels air show in Pensacola Beach, FL.

The AUP is an option available to all students at Maine Maritime Academy. With no Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program in the Coast Guard, the AUP serves as a pathway for students to enter Coast Guard officer roles through Officer Candidate School, Direct Commissioning, or the Maritime Academy Graduates (MARGRAD) program. As members of the Auxiliary, they are part of Team Coast Guard, supporting the missions of the Coast Guard in a volunteer capacity.

While not all AUP graduates seek to obtain a commission in the Coast Guard, many go on to work for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, as well as in various emergency services, engineering, environmental, and marine sciences fields. Regardless of a student’s career goals, time spent as a member of the Auxiliary and the AUP can only strengthen their resume and increase their opportunities after graduation.
